ENG 554 - Studies in Creative Nonfiction

Extensive reading and analysis of literary nonfiction. May be repeated under a different subtitle. ENG 454 and ENG 554 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Graduate students will articulate a foundational understanding of formal elements and genre conventions of creative nonfiction and explain how choices contribute to meaning
Graduate students will demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast works of creative nonfiction based on theme, genre, and/or historical context.
Graduate students will analyze the development of a genre in relation to specific historical, material, or cultural conditions.
Graduate students will lead class discussions of analysis of the thematic concerns of creative nonfiction.
Students will demonstrate engagement, reflective thought about the writer’s own assumptions, effective inquiry, and responsible interpretation at the graduate level.
Students will apply theoretical approaches to the analysis of creative nonfiction at the graduate level.
Graduate students will exhibit leadership by questioning commonly held assumptions and addressing ethical issues raised in the literature, especially as they apply to contemporary problems.
Graduate students will demonstrate advanced proficiency with comparative analysis and critique, as well as strategies and a plan that could lead to publication success
