ENG 555 - Studies in Poetry Description: Extensive reading, analysis, and practice, at the professional level, in theories of poetics, and a representative sample of poetry.May be repeated up to 15 credits with different subtitles. ENG 455 and ENG 555 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: admission to an English MA program.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Articulate a foundational understanding of formal elements and genre conventions of poetry and explain how choices contribute to meaning
- Demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast poetic works based on theme, genre, historical context, and/or historical context.
- Analyze the development of a genre in relation to specific historical, material, or cultural conditions.
- Lead class discussions of analysis of the thematic concerns of poetic works.
- Demonstrate engagement, reflective thought about the writer’s own assumptions, effective inquiry, and responsible interpretation at the graduate level.
- Apply theoretical approaches to the analysis of poetry at the graduate level.
- Exhibit leadership by questioning commonly held assumptions and addressing ethical issues raised in the literature, especially as they apply to contemporary problems.
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency with comparative analysis and critique, as well as strategies and a plan that could lead to publication success
