ETSC 588 - Industrial and Academic Research Methods


Description:
An introduction to the research methods and tools used for industrial research. Topics include problem definition, review of literature, types of research, research design, analysis of results, writing a research proposal, writing a research paper, and analytical tools used for applied research by engineers and technologists in industry. Formerly ETSC 501 and IET 501, students may only receive credit for one. Permission of instructor.

Prerequisite: ETSC 502 or instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Examine different quantitative research methods to approach specific problems of interest.
  • Compare different qualitative research methods to approach specific problems of interest.
  • Construct research questions and defend your research proposal in a literature review and selected methodology.
  • Develop a set of skills to successfully design, execute, and communicate high-quality research methodologies.
  • Synthesize research abstract, introduction, background, questions, literature, methods, and timelines of future activities in a proposal.
  • Evaluate a proposal and provide recommendations during a peer-review process.
