HIST 578 - Russian Far East Description: Russian Far East history from 16th-century Cossack exploration to 21st-century democracy. Topics include the imperial “urge to the sea,” the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Soviet gulag system, and Pacific Rim relations. HIST 478, and HIST 578 are layered courses; a student may not receive credit for both.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: graduate standing or instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify key events, persons, and places in Russian Far Eastern history.
- Isolate and analyze significant issues in Russian Far Eastern history.
- Critically analyze primary and secondary sources.
- Compare opposing interpretations and opinions.
- Organize and present ideas clearly.
- Give examples of the relationship between the past and contemporary events and problems.
- Conceptualize the rich diversity of human experience in other times and places.
