PUBH 521 - Maternal and Child Health


Description:
A survey of public health issues affecting women, children, and families from a population health perspective. PUBH 421 and PUBH 521 are layered courses; a student may not receive credit for both.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: graduate student standing.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  • Identify the broad range of individual, environmental, biological, and social determinants of health of women, children, and families
  • Use data sources and methods appropriate for assessing maternal and child health from a population perspective
  • Analyze policies that affect maternal and child health at the local, state, and federal level
  • Propose evidence-informed strategies to improve the health of women, children, and families

In addition, graduate students will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast key public health and human development theories in relation to maternal and child health
  • Design recommendations for MCH programs and policies using a health equity lens to improve population health outcomes
  • Evaluate multiple MCH interventions and their impact on the health of women, children, and families from a population health perspective
