PSY 546 - Advanced Child and Adolescent Development


Description:
Examination of the theoretical and empirical literature in the field of human development encompassing physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and moral attributes from prenatal development through childhood and adolescence as well as applications for youth wellness. Permission of department.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  • Distinguish the similarities and differences among theories of individual development from birth through adolescence.  
  • Examine the biological, neurological, and physiological factors that affect development, functioning, and behavior of youth including the effects of adverse childhood experiences. 
  • Construct a general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for differentiated interventions. 
  • Predict the effects of diverse influences on individual development, including the impact of a variety of national, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. 
  • Evaluate culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development for youth.
