SAA 540 - Sport in Society

An examination of concepts, theories, and research to address critical sport issues, and explore the relationship between sport, culture, and society. By instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Summarize how sports are institutionalized social and cultural practices in different countries.
  • Compare and contrast how historical variations exist in the ways that sports have been organized and played in the U.S. and other societies, and how these variations are related to issues of power and authority at particular points in time.
  • Assess the ways that social, political and economic factors influence the growth, visibility and popularity of sports in society.
  • Discuss the ways that power relations related to gender, race/ethnicity, social class, and (dis)ability may influence sports and sport participation in the U.S. during the next decade.
  • Argue for or against the claim that sport serves as a site where many people view deviance and violence differently than they do in other spheres of social life, and conduct themselves differently as a result.
  • Evaluate and measure the extent to which governments support and regulate sport at the local, national and global levels.
