SAA 584 - Mentoring of Coaches and Athletes


Description:
The mentoring course provides students with the knowledge, skills, and personal behaviors, and relationships that affect the athletic director’s ability to mentor coaches and student-athletes. Students will review the concepts of leadership and apply them to mentoring theory. Mentoring theory and leadership skills will be applied to mentoring activities within and outside of the class in efforts to create a mentoring program. By instructor permission. Formerly HPE 584, students may not receive credit for both.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Summarize transactional, transformational, and servant leadership styles, and the role of each in mentoring coaches and athletes.
  • Summarize the concept of “mentor,” and revise it in the context of the athletic program.
  • Argue for the application of mentoring theory in athletic programs.
  • Propose strategies that will improve “mentoring relationships” in athletic programs.
  • Develop and propose a process for implementing a “mentoring program” within an athletic program.
  • Evaluate mentoring programs and relationships in various athletic programs.
