Family and Consumer Sciences Education, MS

The Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is an online program that prepares students to plan curriculum for teaching, create a physical and psychological environment for learning, engage students in the learning process, examine the relationship of diverse groups and the educational process, analyze the historical and philosophical underpinnings of family and consumer sciences, assume professional responsibilities, and apply research to practice.

Once admitted to the MS-FSCE program, students will work with their advisor to determine the appropriate program options. The program is offered in conjunction with the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA). GPIDEA is an academic alliance that offers fully-online graduate program options in high-demand professional fields.

There are two options within this program:

Option one is designed for those seeking initial teacher certification. Students will take 19 required core classes and 26-30 elective credits focusing on teacher preparation.

Option two is designed for professionals seeking career advancement or continuing education in family and consumer science education. Students will take 19 required core classes and 30 elective credits focusing on professional advancement.

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the principles and mission of Family and Consumer Sciences within secondary education.
  • Create curriculum and lesson plans, student engagement, teaching strategies, models and methods, and differentiation related to teaching diverse students.
  • Recognize, align, and implement the National Standards for teachers of FCS.
  • Construct an occupational program in family and consumer sciences.
  • Execute success teaching of Family and Consumer Sciences concepts, respect and abide by the ethical and professional standards required for certification and/or professional growth.

Department-approved Electives Credits: 26-30


Students will complete either the “With Initial Teaching Certification Preparation” or the “FCS Professional Advancement” sections.

Total Credits: 45-49
