ABS 340 - Race and Comics/Graphic Novels Description: This course critically examines how comics and graphic novels participate in the construction and deconstruction of race and racialization in contemporary society. May be repeated under a different subtitle for up to 10 credits. ABS 340 and ETS 340 are cross-listed courses.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: satisfaction of the General Education K1: Academic Writing II requirement.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and explain common stereotypes and racialized depictions within a specified genre of race and comic studies.
- Describe the works of key authors and/or illustrators within a specified genre of race and comic studies.
- Apply basic comic and graphic novel terminology (panel, frame, caption, gutter, bleed, etc.) to describe a specified genre of race and comic studies.
- Analyze a specified genre of race and comic studies by applying a variety of theoretical and historical concepts attuned to the deconstruction of race and racialization.
- Engage in scholarly discussion about a specified genre of race and comic studies and the ways that authors, illustrators, and characters work to resist and/or reinforce racialization.
