COM 409 - Freelance Writing (Put on reserve 9/16/24, will go inactive 8/24/27) Description: Skills to conceive and write stories for newspapers, magazines, and online publications, as well as to succeed as a freelance writer, including market surveys, tailored story pitches and recycling of material for multiple outlets. Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recall and use freelance journalism industry terminology.
- Identify and describe the key professional figures in the market of freelance journalism.
- Compare and contrast the composition, format and style of different kinds of media outlets (newspapers, magazines, online publications, etc.) and of the stories published in different kinds of outlets.
- Develop an individual professional style to position themselves in the market of freelance journalists.
- Identify markets for their work and effectively pitch stories to those markets.
- Outline the rights and responsibilities of freelance workers and the ideal work conditions and compensation of freelance writers in the media industry.
- Produce (report, write and edit) publishable articles for submission to actual media outlets.
