GEOG 458 - People, Parks, and Protected Areas Description: Investigation into the historical, contemporary, socio-ecological significance of parks and protected areas and the techniques or sustainable solutions for their management. Topics include ecosystem/wildlife conservation, policies and laws, recreational use and impacts, and collaborative/adaptive management.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the history, principles, significance, challenges and applied practices of park and protected area management.
- Analyze approaches and apply tools and technologies used for planning, conservation, wildlife, restoration, recreation, or public participation techniques for measuring the effectiveness of protected area management.
- Evaluate the political, socio-ecological, economic, and sustainable governance of recreation and tourism and conflicts associated with different kinds of protected areas and management systems.
- Identify the professional skills and decision-making demands faced by current land managers and communities for adaptive or collaborative management, implementation, stakeholder engagement, or sustainable development for recreation-tourism.
- Appraise different policies, laws, institutional frameworks, and professional practices governing different categories and systems of parks and protected areas.
