EDBL 318 - Family, Community, and Culture in Education


Description:
This course will explore the impact of families, communities, and culture on the educational experiences of students. Particular focus will be on the families and communities of diverse populations.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of culture, its multiple manifestations and intersectionalities (ie. ethnicity, race, gender, sexual identity, etc.) and its relationship to classroom instruction.
  • Advocate for the active involvement of diverse families and communities in school.
  • Challenge existing cultural misconceptions within the community and/or school that may limit opportunities of culturally diverse students.
