ASL 405 - Sign Language Structure and Usage Description: Analyze the origins and linguistic structure of ASL. Study ASL phonology, morphology, and syntax; Perform cross-linguistic comparisons with signed and spoken languages of other countries and Sociolinguistic analysis of ASL dialects. Conducted in ASL.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: ASL 253 or department permission.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Outline the history of the study of American Sign Language
- Classify morphology, phonology, phonetics, semantics, and syntax
- Compare and contrast the linguistics of ASL and other languages
- Differentiate types of languages (native, heritage, second, pidgin)
- Evaluate historical events and changes (variation, language contact, bilingualism, and multilingualism)
