Description:
Historical, philosophical, and theoretical underpinnings of American education from the colonial period to the present. A social and ethical look at the purposes and practices of schooling, curriculum, and the teaching practice.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: must be accepted into the Teacher Certification MAT Program. Must have successfully completed the following courses with B- or higher: EDU 503 and EDU 563 and EDU 573 and EDU 583 and (EDSE 520 for students enrolled in the special education specialization).

Assess educational philosophies in relation to current events and trends in schooling. (INTASC 3, 9)
Identify how major US historical events have influenced the development US schooling (INTASC 9)
Demonstrate, through authentic means, comprehension of theoretical ideologies such as Progressivism, Perennialism, Essentialism, Existentialism, and Constructivism. (INTASC 9)
Examine the roles of justice and injustice in the development US schooling. (INTASC 3, 9)
Analyze the role of theoretical ideologies in meeting the diverse needs of students. (INTASC 3, 9)
