EDU 575 - Legal Issues in Education


Description:
Contemporary educational policies and legal issues grounding the day-to-day schooling realities within a larger philosophical, historical, political, and sociological context. Overview of historical landmark legislation federal and state policies and their impact on public education.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: must be accepted into the Teacher Certification MAT Program. Must have successfully completed the following courses with B- or higher: EDU 504 and EDBL 514 and EDU 574 and EDU 584 and (EDSE 522 for students enrolled in the special education specialization).

Learner Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Develop a working knowledge of laws related to students’ and teachers’ rights and responsibilities. (INTASC 9)
  • Identify safe, responsible, legal, and ethical uses of laws, guidelines, and policies and how these are reference in day-to-day schooling operations. (INTASC 9)
  • Apply general principles of law, both statutory and common, as they apply to Washington state schools. (INTASC 9, 10)
  • Exhibit professional behavior and dispositions in accordance with legal policies while working with administration, students, colleagues, families, and communities. (INTASC 9, 10)
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidential student information in an ethical and professional manner as related to federal, state, and district policies and other records with legal implications. (INTASC 9, 10)
  • Evaluate a schools and/or a division’s application of education law to specific situations. (INTASC 9, 10)
