SHM 501 - Safety Sciences Description: Covers the basics of safety science using the current technical domains of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals: Associate Safety Professional examination, including hazard recognition/control, fire prevention/protection, hazardous materials, ergonomics, environmental management, training, and education. Course will be offered on odd numbered years (Fall).
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: admitted to SHM MS program.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and develop control strategies for hazardous conditions and work practices.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental aspects of fire prevention/protection, hazardous materials, ergonomics, environmental management, training, and education.
- Conduct accident investigations and analyses.
- Evaluate risks and prioritize corrective actions.
- Apply adult learning theory to safety training methodology.
