PUBH 525 - Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health


Description:
This graduate level course focuses on the identification and application of key determinants of individual and population health that are related to social and behavioral factors such as socioeconomic status, income level, cultural and linguistic factors, health beliefs, lifestyle choices, among others. Course will be offered on even numbered years (Winter).

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Compare theories, concepts and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice.
  • Summarize the causes of social and behavioral factors that affect health of individuals and populations.
  • Articulate individual, organizational and community concerns, assets resources and deficits for social and behavioral science interventions.
  • Examine the merits of social and behavioral science interventions and policies.
  • Apply evidence-based approaches in the development and evaluation of social and behavioral science interventions.
  • Specify multiple targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs and/or policies.
