PSY 563 - Behavioral Treatment of Autism

This course will address issues related to the treatment of autism. The course focuses on evidence-based social, communication, and behavioral skill acquisition interventions based on the principles of applied behavior analysis. Acceptance into ABA program or by permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Describe and define Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and characteristics of individuals with ASD.
Describe and compare current evidence-based interventions for ASD (e.g., discrete trial training, naturalistic teaching, incidental teaching, pivotal response training, functional communication training).
Develop intervention plans and materials (e.g., picture activity schedules).
Explain interventions for ASD across the life-span.
Describe ethical issues in ASD treatment (e.g., fad treatments, vulnerable caregivers).
