LAJ 544 - Theory and Evidence in Policing Description: Course will focus on contemporary research on the role and function of the police, police effectiveness, and modern police strategies and tactics. Course will not have an established scheduling pattern.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: admission to the master of science program in law and justice or instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and discuss the various roles and functions of the police and discuss the political, legal, and empirical implications of each.
- Distinguish between various philosophical approaches to policing (COP, POP, ILP, etc.) and how they should be applied to crime problems as well as discuss and explore advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Analyze and critique the evidence on police effectiveness for each of the primary policing strategies.
- Develop, refine, and apply skills to read, explain, and critique modern social science research.
