PSY 574 - Multicultural Counseling and Assessment Description: Multicultural counseling theories and implications for research, training, and practice. Permission by department. Course will be offered every year (Fall).
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: admission to PSY Graduate Programs (Mental Health Counseling or School Psychology), or by instructor apporoval.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze the multicultural and pluralistic characteristics within and among diverse groups nationally and internationally
- Interpret theories and models of multicultural counseling, cultural identity development and social justice advocacy
- Develop multicultural counseling competencies
- Analyze the impact of heritage, attitudes, beliefs, understandings, and the acculturative experiences on an individual’s view of others
- Analyze the effects of power and privilege for counselors and clients
- Evaluate help-seeking behaviors of diverse clients
- Recognize the impact of spiritual beliefs on clients’ and counselors’ worldviews
- Develop strategies for identifying and eliminating barriers, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination
- Develop ethical and culturally relevant strategies for establishing and maintaining in-person and technology-assisted relationships
- Evaluate the cultural factors relevant to clinical mental health counseling
- Analyze their roles in social justice and advocacy in a multicultural society
