GEOL 556 - Geodynamics


Description:
Study of plate tectonics and mountain building processes that shape our Earth. Lab includes introduction to Matlab software for analysis and visualization. Required field trip. GEOL 456 and GEOL 556 are equivalent courses; student may not receive credit for both.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Use MATLAB software to manipulate and solve mathematical descriptions of the earth’s dynamics.
  • Compare, contrast and combine different lines of evidence about how the Earth works.
  • Describe the principles behind a variety of geophysical techniques, and explain how these techniques are applied to the solid Earth.
  • Use MATLAB software to apply numerical techniques to their thesis research.
  • Orally present a summary of numerical techniques applicable to their thesis research.
