ENG 531 - Principles and Practices of TESOL


Description:
Focuses on research, theories, and approaches relevant to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. ENG 431 and ENG 531 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both. Course will be offered every year (Spring).

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: admittance to the TESOL Graduate Program.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Plan and modify instruction at an advanced level to assure learner engagement and achievement.
  • Explain in great detail how to create supportive environments that promote respectful classroom interactions and engage all learners in purposeful language learning.
  • Discuss and assess ways to gather and interpret information about learning and performance to promote the continuous intellectual and linguistic development of each learner.
  • Explain in great detail the importance of knowing who learners are and understanding how their communities, heritages, and goals shape learning and expectations of learning.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in social, business/workplace or academic. English, with attention to the four traditional skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Apply their higher-level understanding of the processes by which learners acquire a new language in and out of classroom settings to support adult language learning.
  • Design advanced lessons to help learners acquire the language they need to successfully communicate in the subject or content areas they want/need to learn about.
