Description
The recreation and tourism program (RT) prepares students for positions in one of the top three industries in Washington state and the world’s number one industry. Professional positions are numerous. The following list is a sampling of the types of professional positions currently held by RT graduateS: city parks and recreation director, recreation manager, hotel manager, front office manager, fly fishing guide/manager, cruise director, transportation manager, resort recruiter and training manager, director of youth programs, guest services manager, winery marketing manager, among others.

Students complete a core curriculum then either specialize in Recreation Management or Tourism Management. The RT program supports sustainability concepts within the curriculum. The RT program offers minor programs in Tourism Management, Recreation Management, and Wine Trade and Tourism.

Admission Requirements

  1. Students must successfully complete RT 201, ENG 101, and ENG 102 or equivalent prior to being admitted to the major.
  2. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for full admission.
  3. CWU requires a minimum 2.25 GPA in the major in order to graduate.
  4. The elective area will include at least 10 credits of RT prefix courses. Elective courses must be pre-approved by an advisor prior to registration for course(s).
  5. Students are required to complete six credits of RT 292 Practicum and 12 credits RT 490 Cooperative Education/Internship. An additional 4 credits of RT 292 or 8 credits of RT 490 may be applied to the elective area with prior advisor approval.

The student with a specialization in Tourism Management may choose a career in travel and tourism related industries including hotels, resorts, convention centers, cruiselines, airlines, visitor centers, casinos, tour companies, and meeting planning among others.
