PUBH 525 - Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health


Description:
Identification and application of key determinants of individual and population health that are related to social and behavioral factors such as socioeconomic status, income level, cultural and linguistic factors, health beliefs, lifestyle choices, among others.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Compare theories, concepts and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice.
  • Summarize the causes of social and behavioral factors that affect health of individuals and populations.
  • Articulate individual, organizational and community concerns, assets resources and deficits for social and behavioral science interventions.
  • Examine the merits of social and behavioral science interventions and policies.
  • Apply evidence-based and culturally-competent approaches for the development and evaluation of social and behavioral science interventions.
  • Specify multiple targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs and/or policies.
  • Apply a health equity lens to describe the role of social inequalities in population health challenges
  • Explain the interconnected linkages between various determinants of the health of individuals, communities and populations
