PSY 544 - Advanced Tests and Measurements


Description:
This course will inform students of principles, including measurement concepts and ethical issues, associated with assessment and interpretation procedures in clinical practice and research, including interviews, observations, non-standardized psychological tests, and norm-referenced and criterion assessments. Permission of instructor.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of historical perspectives concerning the meaning of assessment and testing in counseling.
  • Appraise standardized and non-standardized psychological tests, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessments, and group and individual assessments for their psychometrics (including scales of measurement, measures of central tendency, indices of variability, shapes and types of distributions, reliability, and validity) and appropriate use within the clinical counseling environment relevant to academic/educational, career, personal, and social development.
  • Analyze the use of environmental assessment and systematic behavioral observations in the clinical and research environments.
  • Investigate the appropriate use of symptom checklists as well as personality and psychological testing in the clinical and research environments.
  • Appraise instruments’ reliability and validity for use in the assessment process.
  • Critique the use of assessments related to academic/education, career, personal, and social development within the clinical environment.
  • Analyze the social and cultural factors related to the assessment and evaluation of individuals, groups, and specific populations as related to counseling.
  • Distinguish strategies of effectively preparing for and conducting initial assessment meetings.
