BIOL 341 - Plant Taxonomy


Description:
Classification of vascular plants, using local flora. Two hours lecture and six hours laboratory per week; the course includes field trips and individual field work.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: BIOL 183 or BIOL 200 or by permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify by sight ecologically important plants and spring blooming plants of our area
  • Demonstrate ability to identify unknown plants using keys in Hitchcock and Cronquist
  • Describe characteristics of key plant families
    • Classify unknown plants to family
  • Apply rules of nomenclature
    • Explain basic systematic concepts
    • Utilize subclass system for angiosperm families
    • Prepare herbarium specimens
