BIOL 341 - Plant Taxonomy

Description:
Classification of vascular plants, using local flora. Two hours lecture and six hours laboratory per week; the course includes field trips and individual field work.

Prerequisites: BIOL 183 or BIOL 200 or by permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Identify by sight ecologically important plants and spring blooming plants of our area
Demonstrate ability to identify unknown plants using keys in Hitchcock and Cronquist
Describe characteristics of key plant families
- Classify unknown plants to family
Apply rules of nomenclature
- Explain basic systematic concepts
- Utilize subclass system for angiosperm families
- Prepare herbarium specimens
