SHM 579 - EHS Sustainability and Stewardship


Description:
Discusses how environmental health and safety (EHS) programs interact with and impact sustainability and product stewardship, including opportunities for measurable impacts to a business entity. Course will be offered on even numbered years (Fall).

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: admitted into SHM MS program.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize, characterize, and defend the importance of regulations associated with development of new products and chemical management.
  • Describe and apply basic requirements of chemical hazard communication including the format and content of safety data sheets (SDS) and hazard warning labels.
  • Describe basic principles of sustainability, including life-cycle analysis, waste minimization, take-back programs, and disposal.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop policies and procedures associated with sustainability and product stewardship.
  • Apply the principles of cost-benefit analysis and auditing to the practice of sustainability and product stewardship.
