SHM 353 - Risk and Insurance


Description:
An introduction to the concept of risk management, including: risk definition, identification, assessment and management techniques. Includes the fundamentals of various insurance related to the safety and health profession, loss control techniques, and legal foundations in safety and health management.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: Prerequisite: SHM 301 (or) admission into safety and health management major (or) safety and health management minor/certificate (or) insurance management certificate, (or) by permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate their ability to apply business and risk management concepts as part of a comprehensive safety and health management program. (ABET-3; SHM-N).
  • Identify the various risks as part of an organization and recommend mitigating actions for each risk. (ABET-a; SHM-B).
  • Identify and define the various types of insurance associated with the safety and health profession.
  • Identify the various legal aspects of safety and health profession.
