COM 340 - Public Communication: Theory and Practice (Put on reserve 9/16/18)


Description:
Survey of rhetorical theory and practice from ancient to modern times. Emphasis on rhetorical application to public speaking settings. (Put on reserve 9/16/18, will go inactive 8/24/21)

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: students must be admitted to communication studies, public relations, film or journalism major in order to register for this course.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify/explain and demonstrate understanding of how the spoken word can influence people
  • To increase the student’s ability to effectively create and deliver a public speech.
  • To enhance students’ ability to identify principles of public discourse and how it shapes and is shaped by events-both historical and contemporary, as well as influences from other societies/cultures
  • To learn the processes whereby speaking becomes a communicative act where the speaker and the audience mutually create meaning.
  • Identify/explain and demonstrate the goal of rhetorical training- a good person speaking well about significant topics to positive effect.
