Description:
An exploration of artistic eras from a cultural perspective. focus is on the relationship of the fine arts, architecture and design to the historical era in which works were created. The course explores the ways in which art influences and is influenced by its cultural and social context.

Students will be able to:

Identify and distinguish artistic styles of major historical periods in Western art
Define and correctly use terms relevant to the artistic periods studied
Synthesize and summarize information from a variety of sources regarding concepts that distinguish particular movements in art
Apply research and critical thinking skills to analyze works of art from an objective foundation
Evaluate readings in order to assemble a body of relevant information regarding social and cultural realities of particular artistic eras
Use appropriate language to clearly communicate ideas regarding art
