Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify and describe how the First Amendment freedoms developed in the United States, including the influence of British law and the philosophers who championed inalienable rights.
  • Identify, describe and discuss the guarantees of the First Amendment, as well as the exceptions for what the FA does not cover.
  • Identify, describe and apply the influence of landmark First Amendment cases on current and potential controversies.
  • Identify and discuss various approaches to how the courts balance First Amendment rights against other personal rights or social interests.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical use of their First Amendment freedoms and how they apply to personal and professional communicative situations.
